Pronounced hue-guh, hygge is a Danish word that means, “A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” The word has been used as a description for Danish culture as a whole – they are an example for living a life based on contentment and personal wellbeing.
Workplace wellness can learn from the Danish approach to simple happiness. Hygge only requires an acknowledgement of safety, comfort and cosiness of everyday experiences. To apply hygge to modern offices, make the environment comfortable and friendly to employees and guests. Here are some tips to improve workplace wellness with hygge.
Encourage meaningful connections between people. Colleagues know they have to work together, but bringing employees together for experiences beyond work will create connections and promote care. Try organizations group lunches or simple excursions for purposes beyond everyday work.
